The statement at the top of this section
is the central theme of a series of essays
I've written for my column in the
Arizona City Independent Edition.
I've used these essays to discuss
creative ideas for ending poverty

peace on the planet.
I've organized 47 essays into
a book published in Spring 2008
by Outskirts Press of Parker, CO. For a list of the
issues covered in

If you look closely at the menu that is
located in the right-hand column of every page in this web site,
you'll notice a new choice at the very bottom of the list: a
Site Map page. If you click on that choice, you'll not only be
able to find a link to every page in this web site, you'll see
how I've organized the site into sections. For instance, all the
columns I've posted on this site that originally appeared in the
Arizona City Independent Edition are located in
the Columns section. I've attached second pages to several
sections that you can only reach from that section's main page
or the Site Map. Over time, I'm going to add more auxiliary
pages to many of these sections, so the Site Map will be more
helpful over time.
I've done this so that I can keep that main
menu on the side of every page manageable while making it easier
for everyone to find their way around the site. To paraphrase an
old commercial: Don't you love using web sites that have site
maps. Don't you wish every web site did?
Want to know more about the woman
who wrote The World I Imagine: A creative manual for ending
poverty and building peace, Lion's Pride, the
articles contained in the Column pages of this web site, and
many articles found in the online
archives of the Arizona City Independent Edition?
Here's a hint: She . . . uh . . . I also designed and built this web site, but
I could only upload this rebuilt version of the site after I
found expert
support from the brilliant technical mind of Lorna Bingham at TIO Web Solutions.
(To learn more about Tio Web Solutions go to:
www.tiowebsolutions.com.)
Obviously, I have so many outlets
for my writing that anything more would be a "busman's holiday."
But sometimes a free-wheeling forum can help me focus my ideas, so I'm
adding a page where I'll share some of my thoughts, along with some pictures. I might even
add some of the comments that I get from you folks out there! I'll just let the
page build itself.
Don't worry; I Don't intend to let
this thing take over. Rather than
storing everything so you can go back years and read all the
disconnected minutiae of my scattered brain waves, I'll use the
page as a tool to help me build more organized pieces, from
articles to books. Most importantly, I hope to stick with those
things that give you an idea what my work is about.
For that, after all, is my
philosophy: We are as good as our service to society. I write in the
fervent hope that something I say might help someone else in
some small way. If I accomplish that, then I've been successful!

Speaking of serving society,
living green is one of the most important things we can--and
must!--do to help ourselves and our neighbors. Here is a quote
from the final section of my book, The World I Imagine: A
creative manual for ending poverty and building peace:
"In the current world crisis, some people who are
considered to have great scientific minds claim that the
solution is for humans to travel to other planets. It sounds
simple, except for the megatrillion dollars and centuries of
effort it would take to bring even a small part of mankind to
the point where they’d be equipped to perform that operation and
take the trip--if they could even identify another planet in the
vast universe on which they could actually survive!
"The real problem with that idea is that
transporting humans who destroyed the earth in the first place
into outer space so they can trash up the rest of the universe
wouldn’t solve anything. People have no business leaving their
own back yard until they first learn to behave themselves. If we
can’t do the right thing here on earth, we certainly can’t be
expected to do so out there in the rest of the cosmos!"
So, let's all do our part to clean up our little
corner of the universe! I've written several articles for my
column that list small ways in which we can all live green. I'll
continue to write articles in that vein, and I'll try to post
many of them on my new "green page." Please be
patient, and check back often!
Jim Jordan is a talented painter
of landscapes, wildlife, and waterfowl. Subjects include scenes
from the states in which we've lived in more than 40 years of
marriage, including Texas, Georgia, and Arizona. Soon, many of
these beautiful paintings in oils and acrylics will be available
for sale online. Check back often to see what will be offered.

I've finally posted the articles I wrote in the late 1980s and
early 1990s for my Night Owl's Newsletter. That work helped me document the fact that, for many different
reasons, a large segment of the population is awake during a
significant part of the dark hours while most people are sleeping.
I hope that continuing this work will help spread the word
that people who can't get their rest when they're "supposed to"
are not dysfunctional, only different!
During the years I published Night Owl's Newsletter,
I had the privilege of interviewing several dedicated people who were helping
young men in the inner city find their way in life through the original Midnight Basketball League.
Most people know the program is centered
around basketball, but few understand that no player can
participate in an MBL game unless he attends mandatory
workshops that cover a variety of subjects and skills, ranging from personal hygiene
to job interviews. Volunteers mentor their young charges
and community businesses provide opportunities for job training
and scholarships.
This web page features information about this
effective community-service organization.
You can also go to the web site for the current Association of Midnight Basketball Leagues
Programs, Inc., at:
www.amblp.com. They're
doing a lot of wonderful work, and they need all the support
you can provide!
